Using sequencing technologies, a team of scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology has identified a new group of Procr + cells in adult mice. Further studies have shown that they are stem cells and are able to transform into any type of islet cells of Langerhans.
Then the team developed a system for cultivating them in the laboratory to produce tiny functioning organelles very similar to the original ones. After their transplantation into diabetic mice, the subjects’ blood sugar levels returned to normal, all symptoms of the disease disappeared..
Transplantation of individual insulin-producing pancreatic segments is considered promising long-term treatment for diabetes, but it is severely limited due to the lack of donor material.
